Mazel Tov and Kol Ha’Kavod to
Bruce Varon
on this well-deserved community recognition.
I was a USY’er when Bruce became the Shviv
fieldworker, and spent many conventions,
kinnusim and encampments with him.
It’s a privilege to be part of this celebration
with him and his family.

Mazel tov to the Varons, and to past and future
generations of USY’ers, staff and leadership.

David, Jody, Alex and Molly Perla
My father Bob was a beloved and widely respected member of the Conservative Jewish community, here in the U.S. and in Israel. Wherever he went, he spread his own special humor and warmth. He lived a life of fairness, equality and kindness - devoted always and to the end to his family, to Am Yisrael and to Eretz Yisrael. In creating this scholarship fund, we hope that countless teenagers will share the joy we Perla’s all shared during our many years in USY, and we hope that those USY’ers become the future builders and leaders of
the greater Jewish community.

"Every (young) person born into this world represents something new, something that never existed before, something original and unique." Martin Buber

My mother, of blessed memory, requested when we talked about career goals, that I choose a career that would benefit mankind. The fact that I dedicated all of my energies to working with our Jewish youth made her very proud. I have spent more than 45 years of my life working with and for USY and most recently our alumni. It has personally been very rewarding and fulfilling for me. The love that I have received from so many teenagers and young adults and the long lasting friendships made along the way, have been the true honor in my life. I will cherish it all forever! I have tried to recognize the originality, the uniqueness and the beauty in each and every young person whose lives have intertwined with mine. It is my hope that I was successful in being able to impart the wisdom and motivation for them to lead a meaningful Jewish life and that they will strive to always be role models for those who follow them. USY, you have left a permanent mark on my heart!
Happy 60th birthday from a most humble honoree!

Dear Jackie,
You have touched and influenced the lives of more people than you can imagine. We are so pleased that many of them are now officially saying “thank you” and letting you know how much you have meant to them and countless Jewish youth throughout the years.
Our friendship is precious to us. May it continue to blossom in the coming years. We are kvelling for you.

Bruce: Your tireless effort to bring Judaism to countless USYers over the years has been remarkable. You set an exceptional example for your sons and your USYers. It is fitting to honor you during USY’s 60th anniversary. Your genuine dedication, encouragement & passion will remain at the heart of USY.

To the Perla Family: The establishment of the Bob Perla Memorial Youth Fund is an extraordinary tribute to Bob. This fund opens the door to teens to become active members of the community which was so close to Bob’s heart. Current & future generations will remember Bob, what he stood for & his love for Judaism in a powerful & permanent way.

Mazel Tov to Jules Gutin

The Mishna says "a person who does one mitzvah is well rewarded." The Jerusalem Talmud says "one mitzvah" refers to one that a person dedicates him or herself to with particular diligence. One example is that of Talmud Torah. The Jerusalem Talmud says anyone who takes upon himself one mitzvah with real devotion, he is worthy of having the Divine spirit rest upon him.

Your devotion to Talmud Torah and transmitting it to thousands of youth and adults in our Movement certainly meet these criteria. The Divine spirit certainly rests upon you. You are the teacher, mentor and role model for all of us. Thank you for your dedication.

I always describe USY as the best years of my life "Jewishly"...
but they were truly some of the best years of my life overall.

Some of my closest, life-long friendships were formed while planning a
kinnus, participating in a ruach session, or at Encampment.

Through USY, I also had the rewarding opportunity of sharing special memories
with my sisters and I hope to pass the experience on to my own children.

Congratulations to the honorees and to METNY for 60 incredible years!

"She opens her mouth with wisdom and the Torah of kindness is on her tongue." (Proverbs 31:26)
Is there any Torah that is not all kindness? If a person teaches wisdom to others,
it is the Torah of kindess. (Babylonian Talmud, Sukkah 49b)
Jackie,
In your many years as Vice President for Youth in the Pacific Southwest Region, you taught thousands of our teens your Torah of kindness. Adults would have to
wait until you became the first woman to serve as President of the region and later
in many other capacities nationally for the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism. We have all learned from your enthusiasm, insight and skill.

Words cannot express how much you have taught us over the years and we cannot thank you enough for the impact you have had on our lives. Thanks for always being a mentor, a teacher and a friend.

Seriously, we wouldn’t be here at all. Thank you for that.

You are an inspiration to us and to so many others. You are truly someone we can look up to. Someone whose shoes we want to fill as we get older. Someone who would do anything for friends and family. Your dedication to USY is immeasurable and it is because of you that we and so many others have a special connection to this organization.

and so many wonderful memories...thanks to USY!

You are very lucky for all of the same reasons, with one addition.
You get to do something that you truly love to do...thanks to USY!

Jackie,
We met in 1990 I was a youth director at Beth Kodesh, and over the decades you
have demonstrated how much you care about our Conservative youth and
how personal USY is to you. Through your creation and involvement with
Project Reconnect, you enable thousands of alumni from around the world to
connect with each other, continuing the lifeline of all Conservative programs.
You have been a force of support and enthusiasm for Far West USY and all Conservative programs and learning opportunities which has never ceased. Thank you for your friendship and support over the decades we have known each other.

Mazel Tov on your well-deserved honor for all of
your years of hard work and dedication for USY.

With friendship and gratitude,
Rabbi Steven Wernick
"We're EMTZA and we're on the ball.
We're the region that started it all..."

This song brings back to mind some of the best experiences on my life.
Over 60 years ago, an incredible idea was born; USY. The Twin Cities, its synagogues, rabbis and communities created one of the most successful, important and meaningful youth movements in the world.

The Twin Cities is a perfect example of how a Jewish community can inspire and influence a young person's life. I would not be the person, rabbi and father I am today without the support from the Twin Cities community when I was in USY. The Emtza region USY has had a
profound impact on me. It is always with me.

Rabbi Steven Wernick
.העולם עומד על שלושה דברים: על התורה ועל העבודה ועל גמילות החסדים

“The world stands on three principles: Torah, worship and acts of loving kindness.”
Pirkei Avot 1:2

Jules,
You are the personification of this Mishnah. We, along with hundreds of thousands of former & current USYers, have benefitted from your example of what it means to love Torah, engage with God’s presence and benefit the world in which we live in through acts of loving kindness. Your influence on Conservative Judaism in North America & Judaism worldwide will continue to be felt for generations to come. Your genuine dedication, encouragement & passion will remain at the heart of USY
and in our hearts always.

In Pirkei Avot, the rabbis asked, “look about you and tell me, which is the way in life to which one should cleave? One rabbi said a generous eye; one said a good colleague; another said a good neighbor; and yet another said foresight; the last said a generous heart. Along came Rabbi Elazar who maintained that the preferred way in life includes all of these ways.”

Jules, you have truly walked in the ways of Rabbi Elazar. You have been a dugmah to all of us, most especially our USYers. Your life has embodied these Jewish values and your teaching has inspired those you have touched to follow in the same path.

The Jerusalem Council for Children and Youth joins in honoring Jules Gutin. We are deeply grateful to USCJ for recognizing the need to support small organizations which try to tackle big issues. The Council develops projects to help under-served populations. Our Learning Disabilities (LD) Information Service assists parents to find help for their child who does not get proper attention within the educational system. Limited funds prevent greater outreach but those who are helped by us are overwhelmingly grateful.
Thank you, Jules Gutin, for your vision and work to support our efforts.

Mazel Tov to USY on celebrating 60 years!!!
Thank you to Jules and countless staff and volunteers all across the world that have dedicated their lives to make such an impact in our lives and communities. Some see a Jewish teen and think what an opportunity to build a future leader. Others see Jewish youth development as a responsibility. Both are right. We each have the opportunity and responsibility to commit and help build Jewish leaders of tomorrow.
